What are AAC Blocks?

Building your dream house with eco-friendly materials will not only help the environment but also save you money on your overall construction costs. One of the most innovative construction materials used around the world is autoclaved aerated concrete blocks (AAC blocks), which are non-toxic and environmentally friendly compared to burnt clay bricks.

In India, people have also begun to recognize the benefits of AAC blocks as a more affordable and sustainable building material alternative, but it has some disadvantages too. In this guide, we are going to explain AAC blocks and their advantages and disadvantages in construction.

What are AAC blocks?

AAC blocks are lightweight, eco-friendly, and all-weather materials that are designed to deliver a superior level of performance and durability. Their compressive strength is higher than that of traditional red clay bricks and they are eight to nine times larger than traditional red clay bricks.

AAC blocks are manufactured by first preparing the raw materials. List of raw materials includes such as-

Cement, Fly ash and sand, Limestone powder and Gypsum.

Fly ash is pumped into a container after raw materials are prepared for dosing and mixing. Pumping is then performed after the desired weight has been poured in.

Then it ceased. In the same way, lime powder, cement, and gypsum are poured into containers, using conveyors.

And then wait for the green cake made after applying pressure to the mix material. Once it is ready the green cake is ready for moulding and cutting once it reaches cutting strength. Once the mold is lifted by crane, it is sent to the demoulding room, for cutting into prepared blocks.

Advantages of AAC blocks-

Construction is faster due to the ease of laying AAC blocks with consistent dimensions and fewer joints. Additionally, the lightweight blocks are easy to transport, which helps reduce logistics and shipping costs, as opposed to the costs associated with traditional brick transportation.

Compared to other materials, it is noncombustible and fire resistant for up to six hours depending on the block thickness, and it can withstand temperatures up to 1,200 degrees Celsius. It is therefore important from a fire safety perspective.

Blocks made from AAC are made from natural, non-toxic raw materials and their manufacture is waste-free. Since it is constructed from non-biodegradable materials, it prevents rot and mold from growing on the building.

AAC blocks have macropores that prevent water from being absorbed. This makes them more moisture-resistant.

Despite its lightweight and porous structure, AAC blocks offer excellent sound absorption. For this reason, AAC blocks are widely used during the construction of hotels, hospitals, etc.

Disadvantages of AAC Blocks

When used for small structures, AAC blocks can be quite expensive. Because AAC blocks are so expensive, buying a smaller number of blocks can be much more expensive than purchasing bulk quantities for large projects.

AAC blocks, are brittle in nature, therefore they require more care than other building blocks.

AAC blocks are infamous for cracks after installation, which cannot be overcome.

When using AAC alone, very thick walls would be required for insulation. In order to combat this problem, many builders implement an additional layer of insulation around the building.
